Robin came to in a vaguely familiar white-and-grey room, with unsettling noises all around. He’d had to interview people in the new casualty department at Abbotston Hospital, so it didn’t take him long to recognise his whereabouts. It did take him another minute or two—and a reminder from the pounding sensation in his head—to figure out why he was there. Somebody had thumped him, but who? And how had he ended up here rather than still lying in an alley? That seemed too much to mull over in his befuddled brain, so he succumbed to sleep once more.

He surfaced again to find that the morning sun was now peeking through the windows and he didn’t feel quite so groggy. Ironic that he’d been cursing fate for putting their witnesses in a hospital bed when it had never occurred to him he’d end up there himself. It hadn’t exactly been the way he’d intended getting away from Adam’s house

A head came round the door. A cheery young doctor, from the white coat and stethoscope that soon appeared, probably no more experienced than house-officer level. “You’re awake. Good.”

“I am.” That was stating the bleeding obvious. “What’s the diagnosis?”

“Nothing worse than bruising and a bit of a bump on the head.” Doctor Easter, which was what her name badge said, came over and started the usual medical-type tasks, checking eyes and tongue and pulse and the rest of the signs. “We’d like to keep an eye on you until lunchtime, but if everything’s okay, we can discharge you. Hopefully you won’t need anything other than painkillers.”

“How did I get here?”

“In an ambulance. Somebody rang for it. Your Good Samaritan.” She took Robin’s arm: blood pressure time. “You walked in here of your own accord. Kept asking if Adam was here. Is he a mate of yours?”

“My partner.” Memories were starting to trickle back. The meal, the argument, some bloke—he assumed it was a bloke, but he shouldn’t assume—who had landed a few hefty punches. A vague memory of the scent of aftershave. He even had an equally vague recollection of the ambulance, and a nice West Indian paramedic who’d said, “You’ll live. Just take it easy.”

“Do you want us to ring him? Don’t want him worrying.”

“No, I’ll do that, when you’re done prodding me.” That would save a heap of explanations and possible misunderstandings. Would Adam be worrying yet? Or would he have assumed Robin had gone to his mother’s for the night and be waiting for the apologetic message? Would he even care, given what a tit Robin had made of himself last night? “Where’s my phone?”

“In the locker with your other valuables, I’d guess.” The doctor collected her things, evidently done with him. “Fancy some breakfast?”

“I could kill a cup of tea and a slice of toast.”

“I’ll see what I can do.” She left him to rummage in the locker.

His phone was there, as was everything else he’d had on him, including his small gold signet ring. He’d not been the
